Mr. Patrick Carton

Mr. Patrick Carton is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, specialising in sports-related Hip, Groin and Knee Injuries and reconstructive surgery of the hip joint. He is an internationally renowned specialist in preservation hip surgery and to date he has performed more than 3,000 ‘keyhole’ hip arthroscopy procedures for the treatment of labral tears and Femoro-Acetabular Impingement (FAI).

Mr. Carton performs the latest advanced techniques in hip replacement surgery and has performed hip resurfacing procedures in the younger more active patients, since 2005.

He is a full-time consultant based at The Hip and Groin Clinic, UPMC Whitfield, Waterford. Prior to his move to Waterford in 2008, Mr Carton held the position of Clinical Director of the Trauma and Orthopaedic department in the NHS Southern Health Trust, in Northern Ireland, a unit which he helped to establish. In August 2021, Mr. Carton was appointed to the position of Director of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine for UPMC in Ireland. In this role, Mr Carton is responsible for the clinical oversight and professional development of orthopaedic and sports medicine care across all UPMC hospital sites in Ireland.

Mr. Carton is extremely focused on achieving the very best outcome for his patients, routinely and regularly following up patients’ progress post-treatment. With an extensive database of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and direct patient feedback (including 10-year post-treatment results), patients can be assured that their progress is a top priority.

Mr. Carton regularly presents the latest findings of surgical outcomes and advances at conferences both nationally and internationally as well as through peer-reviewed publications. He is an active faculty member of the International Society of Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA) and has worked as a member of a number of international teaching faculties, training surgeons from across the world in the techniques of hip resurfacing and arthroscopic surgery of the hip.

In recognition of Mr Carton’s contribution to both research and clinical aspects of sports medicine and hip joint preservation, Mr Carton was awarded Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, Royal College of Surgeon Ireland as well as Honorary Fellow of the World Society of Sports and Exercise Medicine in 2018. Mr Carton was also appointed as an Honorary Research Associate at the department of Health, Sports and Exercise based at Waterford Institute of Technology.
